Any tips for moving house?

This is the first time I’ll be moving by myself in Japan. The only stuff I need help moving is my bed and a table, from Osaka to Kyoto. How much does it usually cost? Any tips?

  1. With that little to move, have you considered just renting a van for a day and lugging the stuff over yourself?

  2. If you have a driving license it’s probably cheaper to rent a car for the day and do it yourself.

Alternatively (if you don’t have a license) you can rent a small truck (with a driver included) by the hour (search レントラ, not sure if they operate in your area but they probably do).

The driver will “help”. They seem to downplay what the driver will do but our driver was great (more on that below).

Rough Google maps suggests just over an hour by car from Osaka to Kyoto so depending on what size truck you go for, you’re looking at about 20,000-30,000 for 2-3 hours, which should be enough assuming you’re organized and can get everything in and out of the truck quickly.

**edit: if you have a queensize bed I’d go with 2t アルミ truck** just to avoid any issues with getting it all in.

We used them in Tokyo and they were great. Driver was ex moving company staff so maybe we got lucky though.

Any of the regular moving companies will probably over charge you significantly unless you’re good at bartering and knocking them down on price.

  3. Thanks for all the suggestion, I also start to think that just buying a new bed and table will probably cause less trouble and about the same price… (It’s just IKEA bed and table)

  4. One of the cheapest options is Akabou

A dude, possibly surly but helpful, shows up in a big red truck. Load in, load out. Maybe 10,000-15,000 yen

  5. Whatever you do, don’t request a quote from those aggregate site. Dozens different companies will start spamming your email and calling you all day.
