“Independent contractor” who has left Japan

Hey folks, as the title states, I recently departed Japan after living there for 3 years. I filed my taxes as an independent contractor two times prior to leaving.(I hope I’m using the right terminology as I’m bad with these things in English, let alone Japanese.)

Both times I filed my taxes i filled out the necessary forms, submitted at my local tax office, went through the rigamaroll at my local tax office and received my refund deposited into my Japanese bank account within 30 days.

I left Japan in May so, prior to leaving, I filed my taxes early for January to May. I went through the exact same process I did in the past, just earlier. I kept my Japanese bank account to ensure an easy process.

It has been over thirty days and I haven’t received anything so I asked my friend, who I established as my tax guarantor, to call the tax office and check in on the process.

After getting in contact with the representative overseeing my file, he was told that my paperwork was filed correctly with no errors but… they are calling my old city hall to confirm I left the county?

This has me stumped. My friend didn’t bother to ask any follow up question, and due to the time different it will take days to call back and get some clarity- so I’m hoping I can get some more information here.

At the time of accrual of my taxes, I was a resident and in Japan. My bank account in Japanese. My current location seems irrelevant. Why would they need to confirm if I’ve left?

Please let me know if I’ve left out important information. I’m pretty green with tax stuff 😅
