Is it possible to change jobs and have full annual leave from get go?

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question for anyone who has ever changed jobs in Japan before: Is it possible to change jobs and have full annual leave from the get go?

I believe it is common practice in Japan when you leave a job to use up all of your remaining vacation and when you get to your new job have only 5 days of paid leave and eventually through 6 years of continued work get your way up to 20 days of paid leave.

However, when I started working at my current company, they gave us the 20 days straight away without asking us to wait, which I believe is also becoming common practice in a lot of companies. I was wondering if it was common/negotiable with companies to have the 20 days straight after changing jobs?

The main reason for that is that not having 20 days of paid leave from the get go would make it difficult to go back home and see relatives for a few year which is a situation I want to avoid being in. That being said, negotiating paid leave can be taboo as it could give the impression that one does not want to work.

If anyone has any experience in this or any feedback, it would greatly be appreciated!

UPDATE: Thank you for all your answers! Apparently it really depends on the company and negotiations as well. That’s good to know as I believe I am in a position to negotiate so knowing this is possible to begin with is very insightful. I also didn’t know a company was free to give more than 20 PTO/year!
Thank you all!
