The phases of the moon

This is something I have been really struggling with researching. I don't know Japanese and most English sources are anime-related and riddled with misinformation and inaccuracies. Can someone explain how Japan observes the phases of the moon and what the kanji and romanization of each phase is?
For instance, in English the phases are the New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, and Waning Crescent.
Are the phases classified the same in Japanese? My biggest issue is "waning crescent" – websites and translators often supply "下弦" for waning crescent but then other websites and translators will assign that to a half moon. Thank you in advance for any and all information. I'm an autistic Japanophile and my specific interest in this relates to one of my (irrelevant) special interests so feel free to really just dump information onto me.
