Too much zig-zagging on a 24 day trip?

I'm planning my first visit to Japan, for October. I will be traveling solo and packing light. I've built my itinerary around festival-hopping, which brings me back and forth between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka area.

Right now, it looks like this:

9 days in Tokyo, near Akabane:

  • Ikegami Honmonji Oeshiki Festival
  • Jiyugaoka Megami Matsuri (pending announcement of specific date)

5 days in Osaka:

  • Nada-no-Kenka Matsuri, day trip to Himeji

2 days back in Tokyo, near Shinjuku:

  • Koto Ward Citizens Festival
  • Kawagoe Matsuri

2 days in Hiroshima:

  • to feel strong emotions

5 4 days in Kyoto:

  • Jidai Matsuri
  • Kurama-no-Himatsuri
  • a nice night at a ryokan

1 day in Hakone:

  • a better night at a ryokan

3 final days in Tokyo, near Asakusa:

  • Nihonbashi-Kyōbashi Matsuri

I thought that the longer stretches in an area would give me a chance to explore, do little day trips to, say, Nara, etc. But now that I have this framework I'm starting to worry as I fill in some of the blanks.

Is this the right approach? Are any of these events not worth shaping my trip around? Any events I'm missing (besides Yabusame, which is the same time as the fighting festival)?

EDIT:

I've made some adjustments to diversify my experience (and avoid the extra loop back to Tokyo)
