Hello All,
I lived in Japan for 10 years but only saved cash. For the last 1 year 10 months I have been in Europe, but work and life is taking me back to Japan.
I want to start investing as cash saving seems silly. I am not sure if I will spend another 10 years in Japan or move to the US. Therefore, I would like some flexibility. I have 90k cash to invest. I am particularly interested in Vanguard and SPY "growth" ETFs. I have been considering the following:
- International Brokers Japan
- IBKR seems easiest to open and invest in because I will be living in Japan, however, as I understand it is almost impossible to transfer or move investments out of Japan. Is this correct?
- Vanguard
- I am considering opening a Joint account with relatives in the US. I think this would give me more flexibility, but I am worried about how to invest directly into this account from Japan.
- I would transfer money to my relatives in the US for a few months for them to make the first investments, and then hopefully, after 3-4 months, start investing directly into the account from my Japanese bank.
- Schwab
- Same "Vanguard" above.
Can anyone help advise on the following?
- Is it possible to transfer ETFs from IBKR Japan account to IBKR US account, or another broker?
- With Vanguard or Schwab, is it possible to invest into these accounts directly from Japan?
Any and all advice would be very appreciated!
