Converting a US drivers license to Japan: my US license will be less than 3 months old. Will they accept it?

I had been driving for 6 years prior to that and still have the old licenses.

  1. Your (new) license being less than 3 months old should not be an issue provided you can prove it’s a renewed license.

  2. Bring your old licenses, obviously. Bring whatever you can that shows you lived in the US for at least 90 days while you had those licenses. Yes, I realize it should be “obvious” that you lived there but “obvious” won’t cut it. University transcripts might be good. High school transcripts too, if you got your license young enough. These are the types of things they will love to see.

  3. I recommend you get an international driver’s permit also. It gives you a year to drive on your U.S. license while you test for your Japanese one. If that’s how they’re still doing it. If you can simply trade it in, bonus. That wasn’t a thing once upon a time.
