How do you make natto taste good?

I actually don’t mind the taste of natto on its own. It’s the sauce that it comes with that I think ruins it. On its own it’s just sorta bland, but I want to enjoy it more since it’s so healthy and cheap.

  1. Some things are impossible. I would say skip right by it and get tofu instead. But I’ve heard honey allegedly makes it better.

  2. You can’t please everyone! Some people love the distinct taste of natto, while others find it an acquired taste. The important thing is that you enjoy it and it’s healthy and cheap!

  3. Mix some salt in, no sauce or mustard at all. Makes it super sticky/stringy and tastes quite good. I do enjoy the taste of the sauce, but sometimes go with salt just to mix things up.

  4. I always eat it with rice but I don’t like it so much to eat it on its own anyways. I actually think the sauce helps lol.

  5. It’s commonly eaten with eggs and green onions, so you could try those. I know this grosses Japanese people out but I quite enjoy it with hot sauce.

  6. You mean the soy sauce and mustard?

Or the slime? (Which isn’t a sauce it’s a biproduct of the fermentation.)

I make my own and can eat it however I please if the kids don’t snarf it down before I get a chance.

  7. Sauce.. you mean soy sauce or the transparent one(dashi)? If the latter, use the soy instead, it’s got stronger taste and I quite like it. Adding more mustard is nice, as well.

  8. You could try cooking with it. Natto cheese omelet and okonomiyaki are really nice. I’ve heard some people suggest natto fried rice for people who want to mask the taste of it.

  9. So the best way to eat natto is once you open the packaging you throw it directly in the trash. I think this will work best.

  10. Some brands taste very different than others. Some have more slime, while others have a more strong flavor.

I actually cook them in oil and add eggs to it and make a scrambled egg with it. I saw natto being used like this in a video from that omelette guy (kichi kichi whatever) in Kyoto.
