Moving to Japan from NZ, question about taking money with me.

I’ll be moving to Tokyo in July, and I’m trying to figure out the best course of action regarding moving money. The company that is sponsoring me will help me open a bank account when I arrive so I was thinking of using wise to convert a large chunk of NZD to JPY then transfer that to my new Japanese bank account. Wise’s conversion fee doesn’t seem too bad. Is this a good idea? Are there better options? Thanks in advance

  1. that’s how I did it with USD when I moved here a couple years ago. Bank account, and then wired money with wise.

Though depending on what bank your company will help you with, if it’s one that has multi currency accounts you could probably wire the NZD directly, which _might_ save on wise fees depending on how much you’re sending.

My first bank account was/is JP Post which is yen only, very bare-bones but I have a Sony Bank account now which has support for foreign currency deposit. I use it for USD but they support NZD too.

  2. You can open a foreign exchange bank account here in NZ, and then just transfer nzd Into joy through that, and then bank can pay out to your Japan bank account when you have that set up.
