Okay to take more loxoprofen than 3 per day?

Was prescribed Loxonin after a partial root canal at the dentist. This stuff (60mg) only seems to work two hours (3 max) on me and only barely makes the pain manageable. Had to take two overnight and one this morning just to be able to barely get through without nearly crying…got the whole day ahead of me. So I switched to 375mg ibuprofen (5 EVE tablets) for now… But I know they both are damaging on kidneys so probably not best to mix them… On the other hand I’m keeping both levels low and the ibuprofen dose works way better, but slower and at least lasts for 4 hours.

I know I’m asking for medical advice on the internet, but this is hell and I couldn’t find that much information on loxoprofen online, so I’m probably going to do it anyway unless someone chimes in with “I took nine over the course of 24 hours and my kidneys failed.”

Alternatively: has anyone had any success with going back and asking them to prescribe stronger meds? Are stronger painkillers even a thing here in Japan? Because the ones they prescribed can just be bought over the counter for a higher price…

Some extra information: I am a heavy guy, but don’t really look like it (and they didn’t weigh me or ask my weight); maybe they didn’t prescribe enough?

The cautionary story:
Just had a root canal at a dentist that a coworker recommended and was fairly decently rated on maps.

The procedure was WAY more violent then the only other one I’ve ever had (in the USA). Sensei didn’t use a microscope or very many different files, he just muscled through a lot of it while looking away sometimes. My jaw/tooth/face feels BEAT UP and I’m still in an unbearable amount of pain a day later.

I still have to go back at least two more times over a couple MONTHS to finish it..and then a couple more times for the crown (…my nenji q.q).
The one I got in the US at a dental school? One–much more gentle–visit for the root canal and plug…and I was fine enough afterwards to be okay with a very small amount of ibuprofen. And one visit later for a crown. Of course it costed a ridiculous amount of money comparatively.

Bonus questions: should I finished the procedure with the same dentist? Will insurance here allow me to just switch to a different one? Does anyone recommend an easy breezy root canal experience in Iwate?

  1. Dude, just call and ask your doctor with these questions. Reddit won’t know your medical history.

  2. Idk where in Iwate you are, but I love my dentist in Morioka – Yu Dental Clinic. He is great but for the surgical work he gives a referral to Iwate University Medical in Yahaba which has a few great doctors in different fields. From my experience and from others in my family they are pretty good about adjusting pain medication.

  3. Pick up your phone and call and ask your doctor?

Or even the pharmacist where you picked up the medicine. That’s what they are for.

  4. Licensed dentist in Japan here. You can switch do a different clinic, but you’ll have to pay another 3000-4000yen for a first time visit fee.
As for the meds, combining acetaminophen and NSAID could have better pain relieving effects.

  5. I take 600-800mg of ibuprofen every six hours for several days every month, and I’ve always been fine. I’m also probably half your size (45 kilo/150cm).
Take what you need to get the inflammation down. As long as you’re not taking a high dosage forever, you’ll more than likely be fine. Stay ahead of the pain, too. If you notice it is wearing off, move the dose up an hour. If you’re running out of Eve, I recommend [Ringl](https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B06XKNC4Q2/) instead, they’re 200mg/pill and tend to act faster, IME.
