Am I doing something wrong (language)?

Some time back I thought it might be nice to learn to ask how people are doing, rather than the usual “hello” and “thank you” many military folks settle for. So I’ve started asking “Genki desu ka?” And I’ve noticed many native speakers are very amused by this. So am I saying something wrong, or are folks just not accustomed to being asked?
