I have recently moved to Japan on student visa and have a part-time work permit, and I want to make sure I file both my American and Japanese taxes correctly. I currently have income from a scholarship fund (about 15万円/month), and would like to do remote contract work for a US entity.
I currently understand that I must pay US taxes quarterly as a self-employed individual, and I must register a sole-proprietorship in Japan and pay Japanese taxes. I am also aware that there exists a US-Japanese tax treaty, but I do not understand its details.
I have spent some time researching my situation online and on this subreddit, but it seems I have landed in complicated territory with conflicting information. What type of professional should I consult regarding my taxes, and are there any recommended resources for my situation? Thank you.
