Basic Itinerary Help

My husband and I, both of us in our early 40's, recently booked flights for a two week trip to Japan next May (05/04 – 05/18). It is our first time in Japan, and we are looking forward to seeing many of the sights as well as experiencing food/fine dining, art, culture, and shopping. We also love animals, especially primates!

Any recommendations, given our interests, on an itinerary? We fly into Haneda and I was thinking of spending 4 days in Tokyo, then 5 more days in Kyoto, then 2 in Osaka, and finally back to Tokyo for 3 days before we fly out.

I know we would like to take day trips to Nara, possibly Hiroshima, and we definitely want to spent a night in a ryokan (probably in Kyoto).

Would love to hear thoughts on this – whether this is the right allocation, if there are other places/day trips we should add on, etc. Thank you so much!
