Japan in October

Hi everyone!

I’m getting really excited about my upcoming trip to Japan! I’ll be there for 19 days, from October 5th to the 24th. I’ve been reading a lot of conflicting information about the weather. Can you give me a general idea of what to expect around those dates? I’m starting to pack, and I want to be prepared.

I’m also curious about any October-centric activities or events that might be happening during my trip. For reference, I’ll be visiting Osaka, Nara, Kobe, Kyoto, Kanazawa, Takayama, Gero Onsen, Tokyo, Nikko, and Tokyo, and then back to Tokyo.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your insights. I truly appreciate your help!

  1. I went this past October, similar dates as you. It was pretty warm so I wore mostly short sleeved shirts. I visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Okayama, and Hakone. Hakone was a bit cooler so I wore a denim jacket there. I imagine Takayama will be similar as it’s a mountainous area as well.

  2. I’m in a similar situation, I leave the 4th of October and return the 26th. It looks like it’s going to be warmer than I anticipated, so my plan right now is light layers. 2 pairs of lightweight pants, 1 pair of linen shorts, 1 dress, mix and match tees and long sleeve lightweight shirts. Light sweater, denim jacket. Waterproof shoes along with a travel umbrella and emergency poncho.

  3. Weather will be pretty mild to warm. Could be 70s to 80s Fahrenheit. Expect some rain but not necessarily a lot. Depends where you are.

  4. I also went this last October and to my understanding it was abnormally warm. High 70s to 80s most days.

  5. Just bear in mind that’s typhoon season. Have a flexible schedule for travel cause a few days might be blown out and trains disrupted if a typhoon makes landfall

  6. I have been to Japan in October several times (mostly Tokyo). It is usually very pleasant. Last year I have been there in September, but in average it was much too warm then still.

October is usually much better weatherwise. (Tokyo region)

  7. will also be there around the same time (only 7 days though) totally understand being this hype & there’s still less than 90 days to go!

  8. I visited for a month last October. There was a heatwave.

I took a mix of summer and more autumnal clothing. Mostly wore the summer stuff.
Thankfully there’s plenty of coin operated laundries around.
