Hello everyone,
I wanted to know which company in your experience as Eikaiwa teacher in Japan offers the longest summer vacation (looking for min 4 weeks of vacation, paid or unpaid doesn’t matter)
The reason why I’m asking is that I value time over money and due to family reasons it would be great if I could go back home for 4/6 weeks in the summer.

You’d be looking for a **dispatch** not an eikaiwa. Eikaiwa run during weekends and western holidays. They tend to have after school, summer, and winter programs.
You’ll be hard pressed to find an eikaiwa that gives all staff (or any individual staff) a month off paid or unpaid.
We would all like 4-6 weeks off for summer. Not going to happen
You might be able to piggyback a week before or after Golden Week or Obon, but You will be hard pressed to get a month vacation.
Agree with previous poster.
If money is not an issue, dispatch is the way to go.
Sidenote:
Was offered a position through nova once. Was at a public school so my time off would coincide with the schedule of the school. A lot of time off but unpaid… which btw nova didn’t even mention during the interview until I brought it up. Fuckers.
I used to work for an eikaiwa that gave 2 weeks off in the summer, but you couldn’t extend your holidays even one day. You had to follow the strict school schedule.
I think most Eikaiwas will give you 1-2 weeks, or nothing at all.
Look to schools that are not for profit. Some of them follow school schedules. In my time in *eikaiwa* I worked for one that was closed from mid-July to the start of September. I remember being able to book a Friday afternoon flight that was 40% less expensive than flights that left the following day, the official start of the public school summer holidays.
That said, if you’re starting off looking for jobs that offer *either* money or time off from outside Japan, you’re likely looking to the wrong country in the wrong generation. The *eikaiwa* job I had a got only after accumulating three years of experience in another teaching job in Japan and was very competitive: think 100 or more applications for that single opening.
If you value time over money you should ditch eikaiwa and do ALT.
In my experience best eikaiwa vacation is small private schools where the owner also wants a vacation.
Here’s what I do. I work alt in the morning and private eikaiwa school at night.
I make about 35万円 after taxes working maybe 8-9 hours a day M-F. The vacations also usually line up and are paid for both.
Just be creative and try to work the system. You don’t have to stop looking for opportunities just bc you’re employed. I will absolutely jump ship if I see a better job.
Sorry, but 4 weeks of paid vacation at an eikaiwa? No …
The minimum number of paid holidays you get by law is 10, and it’s quite likely an eikaiwa will not let you take all of them at the same time. In addition, there’s no sick leave, so if you need a sick day, that will usually be taken from your allotment of paid holidays.
And if you are working for a company such as Nova or Gaba, they are not under any legal obligation to offer any paid leave at all, since the contract you make with them is not an employment contract, but a business-to-business service contract.(Nova actually has both types of contracts – labor and service).
Now, if you are talking about summer holidays as a teacher at a school or university, yes, that’s possible. But you will also be told when you can take those holidays, as they coincide with the school year. In addition, whether that is paid or not will depend on your contract. From my understanding, most ALT dispatch agencies pro-rate your salary over 12 months so that you still get paid in the months when school is out.
So it looks like JET or a dispatch ALT company is what you should be looking into.
Hi
I’m a freelance corporate teacher. I feel we are underrepresented here on this sub.
I think you should go freelance, if you value time over money. I am the same.
I’ve been on holiday since April 4th . The next term starts July 11th- this is completely my choice because I have a business.
I am on holiday 3 or more months a year. I also work 4 days a week, 12-19 hours per week(19 hours at my busiest) however, if you consider all the other terms not only last year’s, in general, I usually don’t work more than 13 hours a week.
Just one freelance job earned me 3.4 million based on my most recent gensen slip. The other 2 are really small jobs like 30,000-80,000 per year.(due to schedule conflict you cannot accept all jobs offered to you)
The perks of corporate teaching :
– online only ( if you want )
– you can choose your schedule
– no classroom management in the same sense as when you’re teaching kids
– students are more motivated than younger students because you can report to HR
– no tests
-no reports
– no dealing with parents
-if it’s online you avoid coworkers and managers. Keep mandatory relationships to a minimum
Cons
– no stability..ever!
– hard to find
– you have to be good because it’s super competitive. Everyone wants this job. I get rated by my students
Sometimes your students performance on the test will also be a basis to rehire you (or not)next time
– you don’t work you dont get paid
– no health insurance no pension
– you need to be constantly building a network if you’re just starting out
– sometimes HR has unrealistic expectations..
– you have to build your reputation
If you can find direct hire from a private school, assuming you’re just PT/keiyaku, then you’ll probably have anywhere from four to six weeks.
I saw k&f english academy eikaiwa in Mihara offers over 5 weeks of paid vacation, but idk how good it is to work there.
