Hi all, I am going to be shopping for a few things for a new house. I will be getting stuff online, but a few things will be bought at shops, like a fridge and some furniture.
I already tried negotiation at a car dealership and it sort of worked, got a minor discount and a dash cam.
At which shops is it possible to negotiate and what are the normal ranges? I heard I should try at the appliances. Not sure about furniture.

Pretty much anywhere you are free to haggle. How much and if they give you discount is on the shops discretion. Best chance if you buy multiple items and did your homework over kakaku or compareable sites. Be prepared to try not one but several shops. While one says 5% discount the other might give you 25%.
You can negotiate cars. Basically think like a sales manager. We bought a car in June from a foreign car company. You know it is there mid-year. It was middish month. So I said I’d buy the car but I wanted a 10% discount. Why? Because I know that typically there will be around a 10% discretionary discount for sales or at least the manager and it is the end of the half year. So that worked. They just made me take a loan (I was willing to pay cash) and the loan allowed for a full payoff which I did.
TVs and appliances – not sure. I went to K-store and bought new TV on a slow day. Asked a bunch of random questions. The guy just offered me a discount. Not like I was some great negotiator. So I reckon you can negotiate.
Furniture I have little experience with because I don’t buy expensive stuff. I am more of an IKEA guy. But I would look at getting like free delivery (if they charge for delivery). It seems like an easier negotiation.
We went shopping recently for aircon, 3 of them. We got some good ones too.
We got nearly 30% off. All 3 aircons were from the same brand, and we talked to the seller affiliated to that brand… So maybe it helps.
Admittedly we also bought a laundry on that day, but only around 10% discount on the laundry.
That was in BIC Camera X kojima.
Negotiation isn’t really a thing in Japan (outside of car dealerships)
I’m guessing most places will just look at you weird, then say no.
You can try though
