Sidewalk etiquette?

Okay, so no matter which side of the sidewalk I’m walking on, it feels like the wrong side. What side should I stick to? And what’s with that yellow plastic bumpy stripe? Am I forever destined to block bicycles with my confused American ass?

  1. The yellow bumpy bit is to guide people with sight impairments. And there is no universally true side to walk on. Go for the gap. Traffic on foot and on bikes moves organically. The older the other people are, the less they care about you and the more they expect you to get out of their way. Other than that, people rarely stand their ground. You’re going to think to yourself a lot, well, didn’t they see me coming. And they did. And didn’t care. And if you value your health get out of the way of moms on bikes with oversized kids seats front and back.

  2. Are you in Fukuoka? This is the worst place in Japan and I’ve been to many places, for people to show some common sense and walk to the same side of the sidewalk as people in front of them.

Side-wise I think Japan is doing good except Fukuoka. They just have 0 space awareness which is the most annoying thing when walking to crowded places. So people are cutting in front of you, bump onto you, stop and suddenly change direction without looking around, cycling kamikaze on the sidewalk and the list goes on.
