Hi, so straight to it, my spouse was a foreign national living in Japan with her family, she and the rest of her family all got their permanent residency. I lived in Japan for a short period, we got married in Japan (certificate in Japanese in everything), have decent connections with local government, etc., and both moved to the U.S….spouse is now a U.S. citizen (no more JP residency).
fast forward 20 years later, we are seriously considering moving back. I'll be on a fixed income of around 4,000 USD, wife would probably work part time somewhere just because. I could easily get "employed" by someone in the area we plan to move to, as the family has a lot of community ties, etc. we'd buy a small home in a small town in Hiroshima prefecture, most likely cash purchase. Spouse's family remained in Japan the whole time so they can help us with some things before our arrival. Our local gov't friends there are always in contact and eager to help us out.
I guess my question is, what type of hurdles may i not be taking into consideration? I'm aware I'd have to pay taxes at some point, etc., i'm effectively "retired", but I don't mind taking on a part time for some supplemental income if my 4k (appx 620k) monthly salary doesn't cut the mustard.
