How to make buffer time when speaking in Japanese?

Hi! I'm at a pretty beginner level but I've been trying to speak more, recently. Is there a good way to fill time in Japanese while you try to synthesize a response? Something like "Uhhh, one second…" in English. My best guess would be 「えっと、そうですね、ちょっとまって」sort of thing, but I'm worried that ちょっと待って may come off rude or not obvious as to the implication that I'm trying to think of a response in Japanese. I don't want to just infinitely repeat "そうですね。。。" because it feels clumsy. Does anyone have any ideas?
