Complete Beginner

Yeo, this has probably been asked but I couldn’t really find concrete answers. So far I’ve heard the acronym AJATT thrown around a lot, but I have no idea where I should START. Matt vs Japan is my main inspiration and I really trust whatever method he used, given his obvious proficiency, but he tends to give tips and tricks in his videos rather than a step by step process. Is there some kind of complete guide out there? Yes, I’ve heard about Matt vs Japan being shady but I don’t intend to buy anything from him (unless it’s legitimately recommended?) and his method obviously worked.

  1. I have a feeling that this is going to be removed by the mods, but I’m just going to try to get this in because I think it’s important for someone like you to hear.

There are literally countless people out there who have learned Japanese to the same level or better than Matt. Just because Matt is good at promoting himself on the internet and making himself look impressive to beginners it doesn’t mean he knows the ultimate method/secret to learning Japanese, or that his approach is the best approach for you or anyone.

Read the [Starters’ Guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/wiki/index/startersguide), start to familiarize yourself with the languages and the resources available, and figure out for yourself what is the best learning approach for *you*. Just blindly following Matt as if he’s some sort of language learning god when he’s just one of many, many people who have managed to learn Japanese to a decent level is just a recipe for frustration and confusion.

  2. it’s good you’ve started researching different learning methods but don’t get attached to Matt vs Japan or AJATT or something before you start it. I originally thought I was going to do AJATT but I realized I can’t stand it now I do more traditional study and make decent progress that I can numerically quantify easily (anki cards turning green). I will move on to AJATT once I become more advanced, but I’m not nearly ready for it
