Here's the deal – my wife (Japanese citizen) and I will be moving back to Japan after spending years working abroad. We previously lived in Japan in 2003-2010. We were fortunate enough to land high-paying jobs and lived cheaply enough that we're thinking of simply combining our long-planned move back to Japan with retirement.
My understanding is that the criteria for PR are 1. Married longer than 3 years (in our case, over 20 years since we got married in Japan) 2. On a 3+ year visa 3. One year in Japan and properly paying taxes 4. Ability to support ourselves.
My question is really about points 3 and 4. What are the odds of being issued a 3-year visa as someone (currently employed with a decent salary at a well-known gaishikei) but planning to retire? And second, is passive investment income (over 15M yen per year) taken into account when evaluating PR applications, or do they really want to see employment?
