Legal Name Change in US Before Studying in Japan

Hi! I'm a US citizen that is potentially going to be doing a masters program in Japan next year. I've been wanting to get a legal name change for a few years (family's name was mistranslated when they immigrated to the US & I've always wanted to alter the spelling of my name).

I've heard from several people who applied for Japanese work visas that legal name changes (even just a last name change after marriage) caused a number of issues and even a rejection despite all legal paperwork being presented in their visa application.

Will a name change potentially cause issues if it's just a student visa?

Thanks so much!
