At a party meeting on August 8, Natsuo Yamaguchi, leader of the New Komeito Party (Komeito), apologized for “sincerely regretting and apologizing for causing great concern to the public,” in response to a weekly magazine report that Seiji Kumano, 57, a member of the upper house of the Diet and a proportional representative, was suspected of having sexually harassed a woman he knew.

     The Shukan Bunshun and Shukan Shincho magazines, which went on sale on August 8, reported that Mr. Kumano sent sexually explicit messages to a female acquaintance on the free communication application Line. Both magazines also reported that Yamaguchi and others had concealed the fact of sexual harassment from the public before the Upper House election in July.
