Hi all,
I currently live in Europe with my Japanese wife, after having lived in Japan on working visas for 5 years. My last work visa was 3 years, it expired in 2022. I still spend about 4-5 months in Japan each year for work, but have no residence status, I just use a visa waiver.
Wife will likely go on a volunteering program abroad for two years, but needs to be in Japan for a couple of months before then. I'm thinking of moving back to Japan at that time.
If we both go to Japan, get a place there and live together, I should be able to get a spouse visa. But the trick is she would then leave for two years. She might come back to Japan shortly once during this period but will mostly be out of Japan. Her residence will not stay in Japan. But she'll receive a salary from a Japanese govt agency and they'll cover her taxes and pension.
My understanding is that I'd lose my visa, is this correct? Is this automatic or is it a remote possibility in the real world? I know renewal would be impossible but not sure about just keeping the visa.
I won't be able to apply for PR because even though we're in our third year of marriage, we have lived abroad the last 2+ years. I can't easily get a work visa again, even though I technically work for a Japanese agency, complicated stuff.
Any input, ideas or comments are welcome.
Japan sure seems draconian compared to Europe where my wife got a 5 years visa right away and can keep it even if we divorce. しょうがない
