Automobile tax refund after departing the country

I am leaving Japan and sold my car to someone else, the cars tax is paid until next year, can they use it as is or am I due a refund, and if so how do I arrange that? FYI everything else with regards to the transfer of ownership is organised, it’s just the vehicle tax I’m unclear on…
