Residence Tax Help

I moved to Japan in July 2021.

I moved out of my prefecture in August 2022.

My I told my old employer I was leaving Japan and they told me how much money to leave behind to cover the residence tax until next May. However, I ended up moving to Tokyo in late August.

I haven’t registered my new address because it took my old city hall forever to mail me my moving out certificate but now I’m leaving Japan for good in two weeks and almost don’t see the need to register my address now. If I do, it’ll be two weeks from not since I can’t get off work before then and I’ll just be unregistering it the same day if not later in the week.

1. Will my old city hall be sending the residence tax bills to my new address even if I don’t register it?
2. Will I incur any residence tax this year in a new prefecture to pay later?
3. Will skipping the registration of my current address lead to problems down the road?

I don’t really know anyone living in Japan to act as like a tax handler on my behalf but I Aldo don’t want to face legal issues when I return to my home country because of it.

  1. The old city hall should give you a form on the day you register to move out or they’ll put it on your my number card. You need to register your address with the new city hall within 14 days of moving in and notify the post office to forward mail.

    1. Otherwise, no they will not know where to send your documents.

    2. It’s due to the prefecture you’re living in from January 1st. You will pay them later in 2023 starting from June. If you’re leaving then go to the city hall and ask them for help. You might be able to pay it before you leave.

    3. I’m not sure since you’re leaving. I could see problems with not getting the tax payments and it leading to late or missed payments.

Depending on your ward or prefecture, the city hall might be open every 2nd and 4th Saturday.
