Do I have to wait 25yrs to have my car shipped from Japan or can I just pay out of my pocket to ship it?

  2. You can’t important your car before it’s 25 years down to the month. It all goes back to Gray Market cars competing with domesticly sold cars (example: where it started – Douglas deBoard. In the early 1980s, Douglas was an American living in Southern Germany. While there, he realized there was a lucrative market in importing Mercedes vehicles to the United States.

    The European models had more horsepower and offered additional features that weren’t part of the American lineup. On top of that, they were often cheaper even after importation.

    Needless to say, Detroit and other automakers threw a bit of a fit about it and thus the 25 year import ban is born.

    People have tried ways over the years to bypass it. Importing through Canada or Mexico on their plates, the whole MotorRex debacle, etc. It always ends in the crusher.

  3. There’s also something about if the car has an exact counterpart in the states. Unless your talking some JDM Rice Rocket
