Tsushomei

Hi all,

I'm soon starting my exchange year to Japan, and since my name is very long (18 kana), there is no chance that it will fit in any forms, on a hanko etc. I already had it twice that I couldn't order from a japanese web page. So I wanted to use a tsushomei (legal alias).

Now from what I have already gathered, it seems to be very dependent on the city, in some you can just ask when geting your residency certificate/card with close to no documentation, in others it seems to be close to impossible. most information I found is several years old, so I wanted to ask if some of you know more about the current process?

In case the information is needed, I will move to Kyoto, most likely sakyo-ku.

Furthermore the question on what kinds of proof they will accept, the classic electricity bill will likely not be aviable, as I will likely get a room in the universities dormitory, where the billing goes through them, and they already know my real name…. I thought about writing it in the visa form (they ask about other names and aliases, but since the name I plan to use for my tsushomei isn't in my homecountries Passport I fear that this could backfire)
