should I go for jlpt n2?

For context I’ve been learning Japanese since November 2019, the next jlpt test is in December 2022. I’d say my current level is at a comfortable n3 in all categories, and I have no doubt that I’d pass the n3.

I’ve been slacking in the last 6 months with learning due to fatigue so I’m not as sharp as I was, but I’m willing to make a concerted effort these next 3 months to do as well as I can. Previously I used rtk to learn 2200 kanji and most of them have stuck. I’d say my vocab is slightly lacking and my grammar is slightly lacking too.

I’ve heard the gap between n3 and n2 is pretty massive and that’s what’s causing some hesitancy, I also know some very 上手 people who are planning on taking the n2 this winter as well, these are people I’d say are more advanced than I am.

The reason I’d rather go for the n2 is because I know any level below that is just a personal measure, rather than something that you can show to potential employers. If I manage to pass the n2, I plan to continue deepening my knowledge of Japanese with an aim towards fluency. I’d also like to challenge myself to learn as much as I can.

I know the answer is to do what feels right for me but any advice from people with experience taking n2 or have opinions on the jlpt test in general, I’d like to hear from.

Edit: I’m actually living in Japan at the moment so I have a fair few opportunities to immerse and practise with natives.

  1. If you are just at a comfortable N3 level then you probably won’t be able to pass the N2 in 3 months. If you are set on taking a JLPT test though you should probably still take it since anything less isn’t really worth much.

  2. take a sample test of each and see how it goes

also, check the availability in your city, you may not get a choice if one of the two is full already
