Do you ever get used to the temperature of ramen?

I’m American. I love ramen but it is painfully hot for me… I have to wait like 5 minutes before I can even start on the noodles.

I’m curious, is this a common thing? Did you ever get used to it?

  1. Been here several years and still burn the crap outta my mouth when I’m too eager to eat/drink something hot.

It’s gotta be common enough even among Japanese people for there to be a phrase for it: 猫舌.

  2. Why not try Tsukemen??

The dipping sauce/broth is usually not super hot and you get your noodle fix…I’m a big fan of the tsukemen.

  3. When I make ramen at home, I just throw some ice cubes in it like a madman. I also blow on the noodles before each slurp.

  4. I just ask for ice and throw like 4-5 cubes into a soup. Or even simpler, just tell a staff “ぬるめでお願いします’’.

  5. Are you talking about homemade or cup o’ noodle? I set the kettle to 79* and it’s pretty much perfect.

If I go to a restaurant I try to always order tsukemen.

Are you talking about homemade stuff? I set the kettle to 79* and it’s pretty much perfect.

  6. As an American you should already have scar tissue on the roof of your mouth from eating molten pizza slices on multiple occasions to protect you from the heat.

Alternatively you can do some ramen training here:

  7. I just hold the noodles mid air and blow on them before I eat. I don’t slurp mainly because the sauce splatters everywhere and I’m a bit too careful with my clothes.

  8. I feel you on this 😭 my Japanese friends always eat their noodles right away be they ramen, soba, or udon and I always have to wait a couple minutes. My lips are sensitive and I hate the feeling of burning my tongue so I’d much rather wait a few minutes to enjoy. In that case I always start chomping on the toppings 😂

  9. I can’t handle hot foods, I’m giga 猫舌, even hot drinks like tea I have to wait to cool down.

Then other people say “eat it’s going to get cold!” Like that’s the point! Lol to answer your question, no, I’ve never gotten used to it. I just wait a bit then slurp and pray

  10. If it’s too hot for your lips, you need develop your slurping technique more. The soup will barely touch your lips if you have the method down. If it’s too hot for your tongue, then you just gotta blow on the noodles first.
