[Visa Advice] US self-employed with steady/WFM consulting income; how can I relocate to Japan?

Apologies in advance if this is a commonly asked question, I’m somewhat new to this. Based on recent work developments, I’m no longer tied to the US and living in Japan has been a dream for many years now.

As stated in the title, I would like to figure out how to relocate to Japan. I’m currently self-employed and based in the US (US citizen). My day-to-day work is online and the rest is travel based, so my location is flexible. I’m looking for info on visa types that would allow me to live in Japan. I’m not going to attempt this process on my own so I am also looking for recommendations for immigration lawyers (or professional visa services) that could assist in the process.

Some more context: I have 10yrs+ specific industry experience and a masters degree from a top university. I have steady consulting income, including long term fixed agreements with clients. My largest clients are based in China and Singapore. I’m a one man operation — no employees. I intend to pay income tax in Japan accordingly.

I currently have no significant business in the US and travel to Asia a lot for work, which is quite the trek. I can be based anywhere — why not Japan?

Before you suggest it, I lived in China for 5yrs+ and am not interested in going back. Singapore’s cost of living is just way too high. I’ve been to Japan many times for work and leisure and feel like it’s the place I want to be for a while — if not for the long run. Noticed the nomad visa, doesn’t really seem a fit for me.

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any and all advice!
