Working as an independent contractor overseas on a student visa

I’m planning on going to Japan for college at TUJ (no I don’t wanna hear how horrible y’all think it is😭) and I am from the US, I have been offered a remote part time position at a call center in the US which would be perfect for me since the schedules line up (night shift in the US-> day shift in Japan💀) and the pay when turned into yen would completely cover my housing and food costs, it is a special position for US nationals living abroad and they would hire me as an “independent contractor”. My question is, since it is not a job with a Japanese company and I will be on a student visa, would I need to get a work permit? I have gotten them in Japan before and the work place has to give you a document which I’m guessing US companies don’t even know exist 💀 is there anyone who has done this or something similar that can give me some visa guidance? I would also appreciate information for if I find a regular remote job without independent contractor status. ALSO would appreciate any info or tips on taxes and such, I think i would have to pay taxes in both countries (?) I’m just looking for guidance bc I’m completely lost here so any advice/info is much appreciated!!
