I really enjoyed The Search for Modern China by Jonathan Spence for its readability and objectivity. I’m looking for a similar book with the same style and thorough documentation on Japanese modern history from 1600 onwards. I came across Japan: A Modern History by James L. McClain, but I’m unsure about its quality. What text would you recommend for Japanese history?
