Living in Japan for Masters Degree

Hello everyone,

I am interested in pursuing a master's degree in Tokyo through a two-year graduate program. My home country provides a scholarship covering up to 25,000 Euros for all expenses. I am trying to determine if this amount is sufficient to support me for a year.

Assuming an apartment costs around 700 Euros per month, the yearly rent would be approximately 8,400 Euros. This leaves me with about 16,600 Euros for other expenses, excluding tuition fees.

I would greatly appreciate insights from anyone currently studying in Tokyo or who has experience with similar circumstances. Is 16,600 Euros enough to cover living expenses for a year, considering rent and tuition fees are already accounted for?

Thank you in advance for your help!

  1. Depends on your lifestyle honestly. MEXT scholarship offered by the Japanese government is around 10-11K Euros annually, and people managed to survive with that. Not lavish life of course but not super tight either.

  2. I lived a year on 10k €uro. Granted, it was a pretty sweet deal where I had no utility expenses beyond a base pay and it wasn’t Tokyo. However, depending on you living style and how good you can manage your expenses, 25k sounds doable to me.

Definitely check on the tuition fees and include them in your expenses. Check for additional scholarship and incomes regardless whether you need them for sure or just maybe.

Consider the wider Tokyo area and how well you can manage transport. Living a bit outside the city but in good connection to your uni may be worthwile for your pocket.

You can aide your endevour by checking on your living style now. Can you live with a hundred bucks a week? How much can you put aside? Can you beat your own baseline and safe up under those circumstances?

  3. 700eur is like 110k yen, which quite a lot for an apartment. Especially for a student.

Rest of money should be enough, but also depends on your lifestyle.

  4. Far more than enough needed to survive. I wouldn’t worry for a second. My food budget for our whole family is about Â¥500,000/year and that’s while eating quite well. Transportation and entertainment are your only significant variables.
