Japanese TV calls Scotland as “イギリス”, is that correct?

I just watched news from NHK (Japan public TV, similar to BBC). In the COP-26 news, the caption at the bottom of the screen reads グラスゴー, イギリス.

イギリス can be used for both England and UK? Is this right?

This form is also used on the NHK website.

イギリス is the United Kingdom which is made up of England (イングランド) Wales (ウェールズ ) Scotland (スコットランド) and Northern Ireland (北アイルランド). Hope this answers your question.
Also according to jisho.org using イギリス for England is a colloquialism.

It would be nice if they used the world スコットランド instead of イギルス、but I guess it isn’t incorrect since Scotland is part of the United Kingdom. It gets kind of annoying for us that are actually from there though.

It comes from the Portuguese word (Ingles) which does mean English.
So technically its not right… As UK in Portuguese is reino unido.
But in Japanese イギリス does mean the UK now because not many people use the correct term 英国 which does mean the UK.
So… Yes…. And… No…
