Hi everyone,
I’d like to hear your advice on this situation at my laboratory. I am final year PhD at my lab and will continue here as postdoc. However, recently the working environment has turned bad and I believe my boss also feels stuck with this problem.
There is a female PhD student at my lab for a while. A year ago, my boss got a young bachelor student. They started relationship a month later. However, the guy turns out to have mental sickness. He refused to break up and gave her threaten many times. If the polices are there, he will be obedient for a while. As soon as they are away, he starts to abuse her. And this happened many in the campus. Polices reported to University President and they suggested him to change the lab but he refused. I personally suggested her to find a lawyer to submit evidence and ask him to stay away from her but she is too scared. According to her, he putted a cutter to her wrist to threaten her from if she want to break up with him.
As for other students, even though he is just a junior but he has been into trouble with all others. Bullying, harrasment, try to stop you from getting progress with your research, play dirty to others’ experiments. Other international students reported the problem to my professor but looks like he cannot do anything if this guy doesn’t agree to change the lab.
For me, I usually avoid him as much as possible because I know he is mentally sick. I think it will keep me safe in most case instead of fighting back or confront him. So far, I am the one who has less bad experience with him among others. But the working environment is really bad now. And I am really worried about whether or not I will stay here as postdoc.
Anyone here experienced the same problem at your work or school?
