Kanji/Kana in songwriting

So one of my favorite songs right now is さよーならまたいつか by Kenshi Yonezu. I was trying to read as many of the lyrics as I can, and the third to last line reads like 生まれた日からわたしでいたんだ (Bet you didn't know that I was me since the day I was born).

My question (that I'm probably way overthinking) is: Is there a reason (maybe in songwriting) that you'd write out わたし over 私 in spite of them meaning the same thing?
