Dormitory – bedding rental or buy at supermarket?

Hello,

I am going to study in Japan for a semester starting in September. The dormitory offers a bedding rental, which costs 18k yen for the entire semester. Another option would be to buy a bedding set at the local AEON store.

I do not know how much a bedding set costs at the supermarket and if it is worth buying it, since I probably will leave it in Japan. Would you rather rent a bedding set or buy it at the store? I would also appreciate if you could tell me the approx. prices of bedding sets at an AEON supermarket.

Thank you very much

  1. Why not just look at prices at Amazon or ikea online? You can order online when you’re there and get it delivered.

Honestly I would rather buy my own since I’m picky about my bedding. But remember you’ll also have to get rid of it at the end (sell or give it away). I don’t know where you’re from, but it’s not like the US where you can toss stuff in a giant dumpster.

  2. Given that it’s a semester, rent, because

    1. You won’t have bedding you purchase it otherwise

    2. It’s going to be pain to get rid of it when you leave

    3. It will probably cost over that much, especially for winter

    I say probably, because

    4. There’s not really a convenient bundle, you need to gather it all yourself

    5. Again, it’s a semester.

  3. Highly recommend renting. That way you don’t need to get rid of it on your own at the end of the term.

I rented bedding for 4 years when I was in uni and it was great. Freshly delivered bedding every month.

  4. Hassles of disposing aside, I’d rather get my own because I get to choose what I want instead of having to take what they give me. I tend to be sensitive to lower thread count sheets and find them too harsh now that I’ve gotten accustomed to my higher count sheets. And since I tend to sleep really warm, I prefer getting linens that breathe better and get a lighter duvet for the warmer months.
