What route should I take to live and work in Japan in the future?

Hi! I am a community college student in the US who is about to graduate in December with an associates degree. I’m in the process of applying to universities for when I transfer upon graduation and I am wondering what the best route would be for me to take so that I can live and work in Japan. In the future, I’d like to either teach English at a higher level institution like a university or something of that nature or work at an international company in Japan (and that doesn’t have to be language related). I’m looking to major in something like international business or economics while minoring in the Japanese language. My main goal is to really just make a comfortable living in Japan. I don’t really know much Japanese but I really want to learn the language. I think it’s important to note also that I’ve been to Japan before for about a month’s stay so I have first hand experience of the culture. I feel as though I have a couple options to complete this goal and they are as follows:

  1. Go to school in Japan and graduate in the country. This might put me in a better position to find a job upon graduation because I will physically be in the country. I know about Temple University, but I have been seeing mixed reviews about it. I’m still considering it as an option though. I’ve also been looking at Japanese universities, but they seem more selective and the application process is kind of confusing for me based on my research I’ve done. I’m still trying to figure out what other Japanese universities have a program I could apply to. So far I’ve found these might fit me: Sophia University, APU in Beppu, Internatinal Christian University, and Kansai Gaidai University.
  2. Get my bachelors degree in the US while minoring in Japanese. This would give me a chance to learn the language a little bit before I go to Japan . After I graduate from the US, I could immediately enter the workforce in Japan (I feel like this may be harder to do from the United States though) — or I could go to graduate school in Japan after I get my bachelors in America. Conveniently, my state’s main university campus is ten minutes away from where I live so I could live at home rent free while attending school there. They have a decent Japanese language program and they do have an international business program I believe.

And one last thing: no matter what option I choose, I’d definitely have to look into scholarships. Because I grew up with a single mom on a single income, I qualify for a Pell grant through American financial aid. My budget might be a little tight in Japan as a student, but it’s always been tight anyway in the US as a student. I’d be able to use my Pell grant at Temple which is a plus, but I don’t think it would cover everything. I wouldn’t be able to use my Pell grant at Japanese universities of course, but it may end up costing around the same or even less as going to an American university. Loans scare me and I’d rather not take out any loans to pay for my tuition. Regardless of which route I pick, I’d have to look at some options surrounding aid/scholarships. However, if I go to school in the US, I wouldn’t have to worry about housing costs as I’d get to live at home. If anyone has any input, advice, or any schools/programs in Japan they can suggest to me, that would be appreciated. Please be kind and respectful in the comments and please do not be hateful 🙂
