How much should I be physically writing down?

I learn things by doing. I have a really hard time learning vocab just going through flashcards. Writing it down helps a ton, but writing down every single word sounds rather unreasonable…

  1. Definitely **some** if it helps you. Some people might like to write stuff down hundreds of times, but for me, if I was having trouble learning a new word, I would repeat it five to ten times **very slowly**. It lets the kanji shapes and meanings enter my long-term memory quicker without as much cramping and wasted paper.

  2. I filled up whole notebooks of writing. If you enjoy it and it helps then do as much as you like. Creating novel sentences is great practice. And writing it is adding a kinesthetic component to your studying, and the more senses you engage, the more and stronger the neuronal connections you form. There’s no “should” for this one, it’s whatever works for you.

  3. If you are on Android and use anki mobile you can write on the card as you do them to rest yourself.

I have a tablet that I use to write when doing workbook exercises

  4. As much as you want.

I barely write down anything and reached an advanced-but-not-fluent stage. Someone else might write out nearly everything. Just do however much or little seems helpful to you.

  5. I try to mentally construct the characters in my head. Like water, eye, wrap, bug. Try to guess it.

  6. It depends on your learning method, tbh. It’s easy to get sucked in to using autocorrect when typing and relying on that to give you a list of characters to choose from, but for what it’s worth I still remember the kanji I studied 20 years ago before taking a break of over a decade a little better than the ones I’ve learned since coming back and doing notes electronically.
