Fuli Japanese Futon

I live in the UK.
I've been suffering from back and neck pain and unable to sleep comfortably.

I was thinking of buying this Fuli futon which seemed to have good reviews on Amazon, and I would appreciate your advice before making this purchase.

1) Is this a good futon? What to look for while buying a futon?

2) My floor is carpeted. Can I place a washable rug and put this futon on it rather than buying a tatami mat?

3) Can I use bedsheets (the deep pocket ones) as a futon cover?

Thank you 🙂

  1. You definitely don’t need a tatami mat, who told you that? Better to just put it on a literal bedframe. Just if you’re putting it directly on the floor (or indeed, tatami, or a rug, or whatever) you need to be aerating it or at least not just leaving it out all the time.

I would honestly recommend a good firm spring mattress rather than a futon, having suffered from back and neck pain in Japan from sleeping on cheap futons.

  2. Would probably look at your pillow before changing your whole bed. So many people use rubbish pillows.

  3. I’ve owned this futon for a few years now. I have never owned any other futon, but compared to all the mattresses I’ve gone through, I’d rate the quality and comfort high. You don’t need a tatami mat, but if you’re not going to roll it up and put it away every day, I would recommend it. Leaving it on the carpet will cause mold to grow. I bought a zip up cover for mine, and I’d recommend something similar if you toss and turn. Sheets and the like won’t stay on something thin like this.

As for back and neck pain, it will only fix it if your current mattress is the cause. If you have thick blankets, fold them in half, put them on the floor, and lay on them. That’s not that far off what you can expect from this futon. It’s pretty thin.

For me, a futon is perfect and actually helped a ton. I had the issue of sinking too far into mattresses which caused my spine to twist unnaturally at night as I tossed and turned. I actually slept on the floor for a few weeks before I finally ordered a futon. It doesn’t actually fix my back problems, but it has definitely stopped it from rapidly getting worse like it was with my last few mattresses.
