Rakuten Phone – Building Credit

I recently got rejected when applying for Japanese credit cards (Rakuten, EPOS). I know I need to wait for 6 months to apply again (as well as NEXUS/Life Card availability). However, I do want to build some positive credit in the meantime. I have an American Express card that was issued in America, which I can use if needed, but I would like to get a Japanese issued credit card as well.

To build some positive credit, I saw a post suggesting getting a mobile phone account like Softbank, financing a phone through them and paying everything off. I am with Rakuten Mobile, and would prefer to stick with them if possible (I had a really bad experience with Softbank, so I am wary of similar companies like AU etc.).

With my Amex card, I can get a new iphone from Rakuten and pay it off via monthly installments for two years. Will this help to build positive credit? Or, does it have to be an automatic withdraw (引き落とす)from my bank account (like I had with softbank) to build credit?

Thank you in advance.
