Question about Counting Residency under Student Visa for Naturalization in Japan

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing well this summer. I’m seeking some advice regarding the residency requirements for naturalization in Japan. Quick breakdown (all consecutive):

4years: Student Visa;
2years: Working Visa;
1year: Student Visa ⭐️ (Point in Question);
3years: Working Visa

When I spoke to the staff at the Legal Affairs Bureau recently, he seemed doubtful about whether my time here on a student visa (1 year) could count towards the continuous residence requirement for naturalization.

This has left me a bit confused and worried, and I can’t find any information about this in any law book. While I wait for my immigration lawyer to get back on this I was wondering if anyone else know anything about this?

From my understanding, Japan’s Nationality Law requires five years of continuous residence, but does it matter if part of that time was under a student visa?

Has anyone else been through this process or encountered similar doubts? Any insights or experiences you could share would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much for your help!
