Why doesn’t Japanese have a seperate words for ship and boat ?

So I have started learning Japanese very recently,and one thing that surprises me is that there aren't separate words for ship and boat ? 船 (fune) means both boat and ship, apparently.Am I making a mistake,or are there separate words for ship and boat ?
