Experience Snow for the first time

My friends and I are travelling to Japan from December 25 to January 1 and want to experience snow and learn how to ski and snowboard. Our current plan includes a 3 day stay in Hakuba (Dec. 26-29) but we are looking for alternatives that are 1. much closer to Tokyo if we decide that we've had too much of the cold, and 2. with more things to do close by besides going to the slopes.

We are currently looking at Fujiten because the surrounding Kawaguchiko area is rich with activities, but I'm not sure if there would be snow on the dates of my visit (internet says they have artificial snow, but I'm hoping that there would be snowfall during our visit), and whether Fujiten would even be open since it might not be in season yet.

Looking for advice on:

  1. If Fujiten is a good option
  2. Alternatives to Hakuba and Fujiten that are close to Tokyo (1-2 hours by train) and with a lot of things to do besides skiing and snowboarding.
