Bike Rental in Kyoto

Hi all, currently planning my first trip to Japan in November 2024. I plan on renting a bike on two specific occasions during my trip:

  • Kyoto, along Kamogawa park
  • From Kamakura to Enoshima Island

Firstly, I was wondering if there were any bike rental applications that could be useful for my trip? The one for Hello Cycling stations requires a Japanese phone number to register. If not, any recommandations for a more "local" bike rental shop?

Secondly, is there a certain biking "etiquette" that I should be aware of while biking in Japan? For instance, since Kyoto will be more crowded, can I only use bike paths/larger roads? Should I be getting off my bike to cross a street? Can I still access narrow streets? Where is a good place to lock my bike (if it's not from a bigger rental chain)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  1. When we were in Kyoto last November we rented bikes from Kyoto Cycling Tour Project: https://kctp.net/en/access

Their website also has maps with routes they recommend for biking that also includes lots for parking your bikes. Their FAQ has a guide for safely biking around the city too. I’d book earlier if you’re hoping for an ebike rental as they might run out if you show up day-of.
