Dealing with COVID sore throat from hell

I came down with COVID and the worst part by far is the killer sore throat. Been chugging honey tea and gargling which barely helps. Been reading Reddit threads for advice but they’re all geared towards people living in the US. Can/will a doctor here prescribe anything useful like corticosteroids/dexamethasone, etc? What should I do if it gets worse? I’m worried I’ll stop being able to swallow (can barely swallow right now). I don’t speak Japanese well.

If you have any recommendations for an English-speaking doctor/clinic in Tokyo who can prescribe meds for this throat that would be amazing. Thanks.

  1. Yeah, definitely just go see a doctor.
In case you’re looking for something until then that might help, [龍角散](https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B001TIIPXG/) is the best throat issue remedy I’ve ever used. There’s a bit of a learning curve with it because it’s just powder (don’t, uh…inhale through your mouth when it’s in your mouth – it’s a bad time). I find putting the scoop right under my tongue and then swallowing it does the trick.

  2. Not sure what the medicine is called, but when I got hand and mouth disease as an adult I didn’t get sores but I got the worst sore throat I’ve ever had(anecdotal but much worse than COVID for me personally, I realize this is far from universal). Swallowing even tiny bits of water was excruciating. The doctor gave me some medicine that was for sore throats…it kind of worked but was certainly better than any of the OTC stuff you can find. So yeah go to a doctor.

  3. Yeah if it was a normal sore throat it would have gotten better, sound like you need to see a Dr.
    Hope you get better soon!!

  4. I had same issue with Covid. Doctor gave me some medicine which helped with pain and moisture throat.

  5. I had the same symptom, kept chugging tea and took some Ibuprofen. The latter kept helped me being able to still swallow, symptoms got better after a week or so

  6. Hope you get well soon. I know this shite virus is different for everyone but for me the sore throat only lasted a day or two and then came the headache fever and night sweats. So while you’re at it get some painkillers and stay hydrated.

  7. I am still suffering from Covid that I got last week. You can’t just go into or call a regular hospital or clinic. Start first by calling this Tokyo hotline and take it from there.

    https://www.c19.mhlw.go.jp/area-kanto-en.html#tokyo

They will ask you your address and they will give you specific places nearby you can go to that can handle people who are symptomatic. You will have to first contact that clinic and make an appointment. Do not just go there.

After making my appointment and going there, they confirmed Covid and prescribed me a bunch of medicine after determining I was not in need of hospitalization. The local board will monitor your situation. Everything was free of charge with health insurance
