“custom” mnemonics vs actual meanings of radicals

do you prefer to come up with your own interpretations of radicals or use their actual meanings to create a little story?

like 登 for example. i’ve seen 癶 mean tent and then also footsteps/legs, but my friend says he thinks it looks like a mountain and that’s what helps him remember the “ascend” meaning of the whole kanji.

is there a “point” to trying to assemble some sort of story since there’s often a phonetic component that carries no meaning? 豆 is also there, but i’ve seen conflicting explanations for its meaning here (bean vs raised object).

the glyph origins of kanji are fascinating to me so i’d love to see your thoughts!
