Where would you live in Osaka?

I'll be commuting to either Kitahama, Temmabashi, Sakaisuji Hommachi, or Tanimachi Yonchome Stations. Where would you pick to live? I'm familiar with Japan but not with Osaka at all. It would be great to hear what locals think. I don't know what rents are like, but I guess I'd be hoping to pay 60-90,000 yen/month and be within 30-45 minutes. I generally prefer a more shitamachi feel, but I'm open to just about anywhere.

  1. Depends what you want and how you want to get around.

Someone who likes nature, has a dog and wants to commute by motorcycle will be looking at totally different locations than someone who likes the city center, trains, and can live in a small place.

  2. I would recommend something along the hankyu kyoto line. Direct connection to Kyoto, sakaisuji line and relatively good prices for a place.

  3. You should definitely try to check the hankyuu kyoto line. you can get there just with one train.

  4. Wouldn’t Chuo-ku in general be ideal?
If I were to choose one of the stations mentioned I’d go for Temmabashi just because the station has Keihan as well, is close to Osaka Castle and Nakanoshima, and is generally just filled with senmongakkos so it’s a pretty orderly area. Probably cheaper than the area close to Honmachi/Shinsaibashi as well

  5. Nakazakicho.

By bike it’s 10-15min max to any of those locations and between tenma and umeda.

Or Fukushima, more upscale less shitamachi but great place to live.

  6. I am living in tani kyu and work around tani roku and absolutely love the area. Really quiet during the night, lots of stuff around, close to namba and uehonmachi.

Just don’t love the building I live in because it is quite expensive and old.

But love to walk only 15min to my workplace.

  7. Live along the midosuji line. It’s the most convenient line to live next to.
Osaka’s train system is horrible compared to tokyo’s.

  8. I would prefer to live in Ashiya (about 30 mins from Osaka), technically in Hyogo. A bit pricier, but more quiet.

  9. Somewhere near tenjinbashisuji rokuchome would put you in a perfect spot to get to every single one of those stations. It’s not a “cool” station, but it’s got all the amenities, and quick access to anywhere you want to go in the city.

  10. If you’ll be commuting to those stations I’d recommend

    Minamimorimachi/temma

Or just temmabashi/tani4 and commute by bicycle

  11. Follow-up question: Is there somewhere outside of city center where I’d be able to get more space for the same price? Is a 2LDK in that price range crazy?

  12. I used to live in Tani-yon on Hommachi-dori and it was awesome. I lived opposite MyDome and Family Mart, it was super convenient for both the Tanimachi and Chuo line (abt 7mins) as they intersect at Tani-yon. You can transfer to the Sakaisuji line easily too, but I often walked to Sakaisuji Hommachi station because it’s only about 12 mins down the road and I like walking haha

I lived in a banged up old building that was newly renovated. It looked like absolute shit from the outside but the room itself was really really nice – 1LDK for Â¥90,000 🙂 close to Osaka Castle too. I miss that place!

  13. Thanks so much for all this info! I’m in Kitahama for a month before I have to commit, so I have some time to look around. Planning to do some walking to try and get to know the area.

One thing I’m realizing is that grocery stores are really important to me. Kitahama feels almost like a food desert. There’s one Fresco and it’s pretty small. Definitely will need to find somewhere with more grocery options.

  14. I ended up in Awaji on the Hankyu line, thanks to the realtor I was using. Really love the location. Thanks for all the help!
