Notice about rent increase from 106000 to 118000

I have a 2 year renewable rent contract with my apartment company, which will need to be renewed in 3 months. The rent is 106000 yen

Today, I got a letter from them that “due to recent state of economy” the rent will be increasing from 106000 to 118000 starting from the contract renewal date. The condo fees will also be increasing from 6000 to 7000. (The renewal fee stayed 106000)

They asked me to sign papers that I agree to the new rent fee terms asap and send it back to them.

This is the first time a landlord has ever tried to increase my rent. I’ve lived in multiple areas/apartments before with different companies and it’s never been a thing.

And…it’s kinda a lot…? I mean, a 13000 yen increase per month is quite high, so I wonder if it is negotiable, or can I even refuse? I’m afraid if I try to negotiate they will refuse to renew my lease contract with them.

Does anyone have any experience negotiating rent fee increase? Or has your rent also been upped recently due to “recent state of economy”?
